Over the years Kei convinced himself that he would never see you again. The memories he had of you, his first crush, were very pleasant, but often times just the mere thought of you would make his mood foul. Eventually he decided to file the memory of you away and toss the sunflower pin in the attic with toys from his younger days.

You, on the other hand, were very determined to meet with Tsukishima Kei once again. As soon as you got back home, you begun learning Japanese. You were going to make sure the next time you crossed paths, you would be able to speak with him. You wanted to thank him for all the memories he gave you.

You also kept up with playing volleyball. While you weren’t amazing at it, you were still rather decent at it. Along with keeping up with volleyball you made sure to keep your grades at an A so your parents could never question your determination to go back to Japan.

It had taken five years for you to become fluent in Japanese and another two for you to convince your parents to let you attend school abroad.

Of course, it had been your father who had caved in first only after your grandmother had told him she needed help at the flower shop she opened. She said she didn’t feel comfortable enough hiring someone in the area and the bags of fertilizer were getting to hard for her to carry.

While you were terribly excited to go back to Japan, anxiety came with it.

What if you never found Tsukishima Kei again?

What if he was a different person now?

What if he thought it was stupid that you clung to the memory of him?

What if he didn’t want to associate with you?

And worst of all…

What if he didn’t remember you?

Every time those thoughts would invade your mind, you would shake your head defiantly.

Even if he didn’t remember you or if he was a different person you would make more memories of Japan.

You would make more friends.

You would enjoy yourself.

You would make sure not to ever regret your decision.

You decided to attend a school within the Miyagi prefecture called Karasuno since it wasn’t far from your grandmother’s house or her flower shop for that matter. It also had a decent volleyball team- and you assumed that if Tsukishima Kei had kept up with volleyball, he would probably attend it too.

At least you hoped.

---

The first few weeks of school were rough for you.

Quite a few people were very stand offish towards you due to you being a foreigner. As a result, you hadn’t managed to make a single friend.

You had made the volleyball team, but didn’t managed to snag a starting position which put you down even further.

On top of that, you hadn’t even managed to find Tsukishima Kei.

You felt disheartened to say the least.

The thing that kept you going was your grandmother.

“You’ll get your time to shine, sweetheart. Don’t you worry yourself about that,” she told you after finding out you hadn’t made a starting position.

Between volleyball and working at the flower shop you managed to keep yourself busy enough that you didn’t think of Kei very often.

One day you were watering flowers outside of the flower shop when you heard a ruckus next door. Sakonshita Store was always rather noisy since the boys’ volleyball team usually stopped there after practice. Most of the time you ignored it- it was usually the overactive red headed boy in your class and the forever brooding boy from another class.

For some reason, you felt compelled to look over.

Sure enough, it was the usual suspects standing in front of the store. They appeared to be talking to someone but whoever they were, you couldn’t see them as they were hidden behind the front door. Seconds later a boy with medium length black hair and a freckled face stepped through. He was looking over his shoulder at someone.

And then-

He came out behind the freckled boy.

It was like time had stopped for you.

It was him.

Tsukishima Kei.

There was no doubt about it.

Short blonde hair, light brown eyes, black framed glasses- that smug grin on his face.

No longer could you hear the rowdy red headed boy or his companions.

All sound was replaced with the heavy thumping of your heart.

Your palms were sweating.

Your breathing slow and heavy.

Every moment you spent with him flashed through your mind.

Your cheeks lit up like a tomato.

It was at that moment you realized all those years ago, you had developed a crush on him and that was why you held him on such a pedestal, why you would get so anxious at the thought of seeing him again.

You felt the watering can slip from your sweaty fingers.

The loud clang cause everyone to shift their attention to you and you to shift your attention to the watering can.

“Fuck.”

When you looked back over at the group of boys, they were all staring at you. Even Kei, who looked like he had seen a ghost.

Hinata recognized you immediately.

“Oi, (last name)-san!” he waved at you furiously.

“Hima…wari?” Tsukishima spoke, as he pushed Hinata out of the way. The other three boys looked up at him with questionable expressions.

He saw your eyes widen.

And the next thing he knew you were fleeing into the nearby shop like your life depended on it.

Instinctively he ran after you.

Was it really you?

Were you really back?

He had to know.

Expecting the doors to open when he pushed them, he found himself bouncing off of them.

You had locked the doors.

He could see you peering over the counter him.

Seeing your eyes watching him caused his cheeks to tinge a slight red.

He tugged on the door.

You had dreamed of the reunion between the two of you.

You expected it to be just something casual.

You expected it to be while you were in the middle of playing volleyball.

You expected it to be in the middle of walking to the cafeteria.

This was not at all how you figured it would’ve turned out.

Your heart was hammering like crazy.

You couldn’t form a coherent sentence.

Kei turned toward Hinata who was speaking in loud whispers with the other two boys.

“Hinata, you called Himawari “(last name)”-san, do you know her?” He asked.

Hinata snapped up straight.

The blush on Kei’s face was visible and he made no effort to hide it.

“Er, yeah. (Last name)-san is in my class. Apparently she moved here and is living with her grandmother. At least that’s what she said when she introduced herself to the class,” Hinata replied.

“Does she speak Japanese?”

“Yes! She’s fluent in it!”

With that Kei turned back to the door.

“Himawari, meet me by the gumball machine in two hours,” Tsukishima said, “If you don’t, I’ll take that as you not wanting to talk to me. I’ll leave you alone and never bother you again.”

The only thing you could muster up in response was lifting your hand up and giving him a thumbs up.

You felt like such an idiot.

With that, the boy put his headphones over his ears and turned away from the door. He started walking off causing the other boys to follow suit.

---

You were there thirty minutes early. You hadn’t bothered to go home and change so you were still wearing your work clothes which were still covered in dirt.

It had taken every fiber of your being to go to the gumball machine.

You were incredibly nervous.

You thought about all the things you wanted to say to him.

“Calm the fuck down,” you told yourself, closing your eyes and breathing deeply.

“Brings back memories, huh?”

You opened your eyes and found yourself face to face with Kei, granted he was leaning over so he would be at eye level with you. You quickly stepped away from him.

“I can’t believe you ran away from me. You were so slow back then,” he laughed, turning to his left. He was doing his best to remain his usual self and not the flustered mess you had seen before. “I don’t think I’m that scary looking.”

You tried to think of something to say, but everything was jumbled up.

“Cat got your tongue, Himawari?” He said, with a smug grin that made you think back to your childhood when he had handed you the gumball.

You said nothing in response, only looking down at the ground.

“Guess so. Guess it’ll be just like when we were kids.”

He pulled out his phone.

Blush spread across his cheeks and he typed.

He showed the screen to you.

“I missed you.”

Any anxiety or general nervous dissipated the moment you saw those words.

You looked up at him with a wide smile on your face.

 “I missed you too.”
